Doug Aitken(born 1968) is an American multimedia artist with a very modern style whose works range from photography, print media, sculpture, and architectural interventions, to narrative films, sound, single and multi-channel video works, installations, an live performance. His works have taken place in culturally loaded sites, and he has collaborated on his films with musicians from hip-hop artists to Indie bands. He originally studied magazine illustration with Phillip Hays at the Art enter College of Design in Pasadena, but later went on to graduating with a degree in Fine Arts in 1991.
Aitken has participated in over 200 art exhibitions throughout the world, and has had his work feature in many widely known museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is represented by the 303 Gallery in New York, Regen Projects in Los Angeles, Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich and Victoria Miro Gallery in London. His accomplishments also include the winning of several awards such as the Golden Lion in 1999, the Aldrich Award in 2000, the German Film Critic’s Award in 2007, the Aurora Award in 2009, and most recently the Nam June Paik Art Center Prize in 2012.
He currently lives and works in Los Angeles and New York. He is largely known for his outdoor installations such as his "sleep walkers" exhibition in 2007 which transformed an entire block of manhattan into a cinematic experience by casting projections all over the walls of the Museum of Modern Art. The projections included actors and musicians, and inside the museum one of the musicians was performing and there was one of his "happenings". The "happenings" are live performances directed by him.
